San Francisco, CA- One cannot disrespect the fundamentals in the game of boxing, for it will come back and bite you in the ass in the form of an ass kicking. That being said, I never liked Adrien Broner as a fighter or a person. Everybody I know, sans one staff writer, was hoping to see Marcos Maidana mop the floor with him and that is just what the fiery Argentine did.
BRONER HAD NO RESPECT & GOT DISRESPECTED
The second round knockdown, the battering, another knockdown in round eight, the eventual wide points loss, you didn’t have to dislike Broner to see this coming. The huge amounts of weight Adrien puts on between fights, Larry Merchant’s take on the weighty issue and the Cincinnati based fighter, “You can get away with it when you’re young.” That being said, Broner is 24 and I say he is done! Think Zab Judah or Andre Berto.
ADRIEN’S MOVE UP IN WEIGHT TOO FAST!
The fact that he was fighting guys at 130 & 135 not too long ago before squeezing by Paulie Malignaggi at 147, Broner is as historian Ron Marshall calls him, “Chubby.” When you report to camp and you’re way over the bar, a fighter spends an entire training camp having to shed weight. Might get away with that on occasion, but sooner or later, ask the great Roberto Duran, you end up getting licked in a fight most people thought you would win.
MAIDANA THROWS MAJOR LEAGUE PUNCHES
What was thought to be hitting tee ball for the younger and faster Broner turned out to Nolan Ryan throwing 100 MPH heat at him in baseball. Not too many people could hit Ryan, but hitting Broner was not such a difficult task for Maidana. (34-3, 31 KOs) Having once interviewed Broner on “Ring Talk Worldwide” while he was getting a haircut, and found him to be too, too, too into himself. I will do a complete weekend wrap that includes Europe later today. Scores were 115-110, 116-109 and 117-109.
