Marcos Maidana earned a welterweight title on Saturday night with a pressure-filled performance against Adrien Broner to hand the man who calls himself “The Problem” his first pro loss.
Maidana (35-3, 31 KOs) came out swinging right from the start and had Broner (27-1, 22 KOs) against the roes as he pounded away to the head and body, not allowing Broner to even warm up. With less than 30 seconds to go in the round after getting stunned, Broner tied up Maidana and then turned behind him and made a humping motion, which upset Maidana – more on that later.
In the second, Maidana landed two left hooks early on that sent Broner down to the canvas for the first time in his career. Broner made it to his feet but he was on wobbly legs as he tried shaking off the cobwebs. Broner continued trying to survive the round as Maidana drilled him from all angles and busted up his nose. To his credit, Broner somehow stayed on his feet for the next two rounds but was pretty unsteady.
Broner did a better job in the fourth and fifth rounds by countering Maidana and landing quick combinations. Maidana meanwhile, continued working to the body and Broner was warned twice for pushing with both hands. After a very competitive sixth round, Maidana became a little sloppy in the seventh as he was winging his punches and wasn’t setting his feet.
A left hook put Broner down again in the eighth round during an exchange, though he didn’t appear as hurt as he was in the second round. Moments after, while Maidana tried to finish the fight, Broner locked his arms and wouldn’t let Maidana free, which prompted a blatant headbutt to the chin that resulted in a point deduction. Broner for his part went down to the canvas like he had just been shot but referee Laurence Cole didn’t buy it and told him to get up.
In the ninth round, Maidana stunned Broner again with a left hook, and took it to him along the ropes, but before the end of the round, appeared to have punched himself out and Broner capitalized by landing his jab and counter right hands. Both fighters took the 11th off as Maidan looked tired and Broner became more tentative. However, in the 12th round, the two came out swinging and Broner buzzed Maidana with a left hook that sent him back to the ropes, though he managed to recover quickly. In the end, Maidana stunned Broner again and they traded punches to close out the round. Scores were 115-110, 116-109 and 117-109 for Maidana.
“The plan was to fight any which way we can do it and we won,” said Maidana after the fight. When asked about giving Broner a rematch, Maidana said, “no problem.”
No problem indeed, as an upset Broner, who made no qualms about the loss, rushed back to his dressing room without saying a world.
